How And Why You Need To Stand Better

Sitting is getting all the attention these days.

Sitting will kill you, it will ruin your hip flexors, and it will destroy your metabolism – in case it didn’t kill you already.

You hear this information and want to do something about it. So you start standing up more. Problem solved, right?

Guess again.

There are two big issues with ‘standing’ as a solution to the negative effects of sitting.

First, part of why sitting is a problem is because you’re sedentary when you sit. You’re staying in one position for an extended period of time.

When you’re standing, you’re...staying in one position for an extended period of time.

Your body likes to move. It develops and maintains joint health, soft tissue pliability, and neural control when it moves regularly.

Sitting or standing, it doesn’t matter, neither take your body through a sizeable amount of movement during your day. Even if you change positions every thirty minutes, you’re still moving in a tiny sliver of the total range of movements your body is capable of moving in.

The culprit isn’t just sitting. It’s sedentary behavior – including standing. To combat this, you’ve got to move…more and in a variety of ways.

The second big issue with standing as a replacement for sitting is that most people will stand with sub-optimal body position. Your body adapts to things you do frequently and consistently.

If you stand and use a compensation strategy to get you out of standing on both legs equally, your body will adapt to that.

If you’re going to stand, stand well.

Since most folks:
a) don’t even realize they’re standing sub-optimally and
b) don’t know what “better” looks and feels like when they stand.
